Carrying Forward Rabbi Ellenson’s Legacy: Highlights from the Conference

There is no more fitting way to launch 91첥’s 150th anniversary celebrations than with A Conference in Memory of David Ellenson: Assessing His Impact, Advancing His Legacy, bringing together leading scholars to honor Rabbi David Ellenson, ”l—an intellectual giant, beloved teacher, and visionary leader of our institution. Through panels on Jewish Thought, Jewish Intellectual History, Liturgy/Siddur, Halakhah, and a special evening program, In Dialogue with David: Remembering Rabbi Ellenson’s Transformative Leadership, participants reflected on his extraordinary scholarship and the ways he bridged tradition and modernity with humility, warmth, and brilliance. The conference highlighted how Rabbi Ellenson continues to inspire new generations of rabbis, scholars, and leaders in Jewish life.

Drawing upon Rabbi Ellenson’s groundbreaking scholarship and his transformative leadership at 91첥, our Monday night panel examined the dynamic tensions between tradition and innovation that define Reform Judaism today. It was an inspiring discussion that celebrated the profound scholarly and spiritual legacy of Rabbi Ellenson, through the lens of his lifelong commitment to Reform Judaism. This gathering brought together three esteemed colleagues and friends of Rabbi Ellenson, each of whom shared deep personal and professional bonds with this towering figure in Jewish education and leadership.
